KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hall of Fame voters elected former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
The announcement came Saturday night in Atlanta, the city where Gonzalez finished his dazzling career.
The Chiefs drafted Gonzalez out of the University of California with the 13th pick in the first round of the 1997 NFL draft.
Gonzalez shredded defenses with his size and speed and became a focal point of the Chiefs offense.
He caught 76 passes and scored 11 touchdowns in his third season.
Gonzalez earned the first of six first team selections to the Associated Press All-Pro team.
Fans quickly made Gonzalez a favorite both on and off the field.
He became active in charities in the Kansas City area.
His best season as a Chief came in 2004 when he caught 102 passes for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns.
Gonzalez topped 1,000 yards in receiving four times with the Chiefs.
The Chiefs traded Gonzalez in 2009 to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round draft pick.
He caught 1,325 passes for more than 15,000 yards and 111 touchdowns.
