KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There will be no delay to the start of the winter high school sports season in Kansas.

Board members of the Kansas State High School Activities Association voted Tuesday to allow the season to start on time but did extend the holiday break.

According to details from the meeting, the break extension will mean no contact from Dec. 23 through Jan. 7. Competitions will resume on Jan. 8.

Board members also voted to mirror middle and junior high school seasons after those for high school.

The board also voted to ban fans from any middle or high school competition through Jan. 28.

High school basketball teams will be allowed to play 20 regular season games and postseason tournaments.

In addition, swimming and diving teams, wrestling and bowling squad also will have their normal number of competitions.

All of those competitions are dependent on the COVID-19 outbreak and any decisions to alter the schedules to protect athletes, coaches and event staff.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
