KANSAS CITY, Mo. — High school students in Kansas could soon have the option to play fall sports and participate in extracurriculars due to a recent vote by the Kansas High School Activities Association Executive Board.

A proposal for an “alternative fall season opportunity” was approved Monday night, but still must receive final approval.

The plan would allow schools to push back the start date for all but two fall activities – debate and scholars bowl – to March 1. A virtual format already has been approved for debate and is pending approval for scholars bowl.

State meets, tournaments and playoffs would not occur for any fall sports or activities.

KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said in a news release that the model would give an opportunity for students to take part in activities “when it is appropriate in their school communities later this year.”

KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Jeremy Holaday said the organization's goal is for students to play in the fall.

"The majority of our schools, of our 355 high schools are doing the best they can to play this fall," Holaday said.

Participation would be optional, according to the proposal, and "there is no guarantee the health status of respective communities will allow for the alternative fall season."

The KSHSAA Board of Directors will vote on the proposal Friday.

The full proposal can be viewed on the KSHSAA website.
