KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's been a wild off season for the Chiefs as they try to rebuild.

Andy Reid has gone on the record to say that the Chiefs were just "four inches away " from reaching the Super Bowl. So, in many cases what you have to do is implode this team, especially on the defensive side of the ball and start fresh.

"None of us have played a game since February at the most recent," new defensive assistant coach Brendan Daly, who spent last season with New England said. "You kind of have to reset yourself and get into a different routine. A different flow. This is a challenge in another way."

It's been a learning experience for new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as well.

"It's been all about building a foundation of fundamentals." Spagnuolo said. "It goes to communication, believing in the system and I talk extensively about doing the things or mastering the things that take very little talent."

The Chiefs have done it both ways, improving via the draft and free agency, bringing in top notched guys like Tyrann Mathieu and Frank Clark who will hopefully get this team back in the driver's seat toward the AFC West title.

"Sometimes it's really difficult in free agency in this league to find out the intangible things. The things you can't see on film," Spagnuolo said. "You gotta dig deep and Brett and his staff did a great job. We know what we were getting, and these guys have been what we've thought."

The next time the Chiefs take the field will be for a preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals on August 10.
