The folks at Spay and Neuter Kansas City tell 41 Action News there is a kitten boom going on across the metro right now.

"Any cat should be spayed or neutered," explained Marlan Roberts with Spay and Neuter Kansas City. "Cats' reproduction rate is amazing. It's crazy how many kittens they can have each year. The simple thing of getting that cat spayed or neutered can end the suffering of so many pets later on down the road."

An average cat has between one and eight kittens per litter and two to three litters per year. During her reproductive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens. A single pair of cats and their offspring can produce nearly 500,000 offspring in less than a decade.

The best ways to contribute are to get your cat spayed or neutered, especially if it is an outdoor cat. And if you're in the market for a feline friend, adopt don't shop. That helps keep the pet population in our shelters down, while also giving an animal a home that could have otherwise been put down.

Spay and Neuter Kansas City offers low-cost spay, neuter and vaccination programs. They also offer assistance to customers who can't afford sterilization or shots for their pets.
