KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-off Event in Kansas City is usually a feel-good gathering before the beginning of the season. Tonight, it was the only good news college basketball has received all week.

The campaign is in its 25th year. Spearheaded by former Missouri head basketball coach Norm Stewart, Coaches vs Cancer has raised over $100 million in its fight against the disease.

Well, now the sport is embroiled in another fight: this one with the Feds. The FBI arrested 10 people this week on corruption charges stemming from an Adidas rep funneling money to basketball blue chippers along with agents doing the same with college assistant coaches.

Bill Self called it a dark week for college basketball. "I think kids should be able to go out of high school (to the NBA)," said Self. "And if kids go out of high school, the most highly recruited guys won't be in college where you'll be dealing with certain things like this."

Kansas State's Bruce Weber was in town for the event as well.

"There's a lot going on," admitted the 6th-year Wildcat head man. "Obviously a lot will be rumored. And it's gonna go for many many months."

"Any time you're talking about jail time that's a serious deal," said new Mizzou coach Cuonzo Martin. "But, again, I think we have to sit down and address some tough situations, some tough topics."
