Are you seeing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens?” You know, this film:
Some fans may want to dress up for the first "Star Wars" film in 10 years. Many local theaters are showing the movie, and they have different costume policies concerning face paint, masks and props for the movie premier.
We contacted local theaters to see what is allowed and what rebels or Empire forces should leave at home.
Alamo Drafthouse: Kansas City
Ryan Davis with the Alamo Drafthouse said all cos-players are welcome and face paint and masks are allowed. Davis said lightsabers and other props are allowed as long as they are obviously part of a costume.
The Alamo is also having a Star Wars Cos-Play Cantina Party on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. The Alamo said Elite Comics will be there with trivia, giveaways and a pop up Star Wars comic shop. Find out more at https://drafthouse.com/kansas-city/news/star-wars-cos-play-cantina-party.
AMC Theaters
Per AMC Theaters' costume policy, masks and face paint are not allowed. AMC stated in a news release that lightsabers are allowed, but you have to turn it off during the movie. AMC does not allow toy blasters. AMC’s costume policy prohibits weapons and “items that would make other guests feel uncomfortable or detract from the movie-going experience.”
B & B Theatres
Paul Farnsworth, the District Marketing and Public Relations Manager for B & B Theatres, said face paint and masks are not allowed. Farnsworth said lightsabers are allowed, but toy blasters, weapons or other items that “might cause guests to feel alarm, anxiety or discomfort” are not allowed.
“If our patrons feel included to express their enthusiasm for a film through dress or costume, we absolutely encourage them to do so. That being said, the safety and wellbeing of our customers are and will always be our primary interest,” Farnsworth said in an email. “There may be case-by-case situations where a costume falls within the acceptable parameters outline above but may still cause distraction or concern for other guests. Our local managers have been trained to assess these situations and address them appropriately.”
Cinemark
An assistant manager at Cinemark 20 NXD in Merriam, Kan., said face paint and masks are not allowed. They said fans can dress up as long as their faces are not covered or painted. They also said deactivated lightsabers that are shorter are allowed. The assistant manager said any item that looks like a weapon is not allowed.
Cinetopia
Cinetopia's costume policy states face paint and masks are not allowed. The policy states lightsabers are allowed, but you cannot use them inside auditoriums. Real and fake weapons are not allowed.
Cinetopia’s full costume policy reads:
"Excluding Lightsabers, real & fake weapons are not permitted inside Cinetopia. Use of a Lightsaber is prohibited inside auditoriums. While we encourage dressing up, masks or concealing your face is not allowed. Thank you."
Screenland Theatres
Justin Roberts, the manager at Screenland Crossroads, said face paint and masks are allowed. Roberts said realistic looking weapons are not allowed, and anything suspicious, including larger bags, will be checked.
