Vinyl is hip again. No longer only the territory of dusty vintage record stores, you can find LPs in places as mainstream as Barnes & Noble and Best Buy these days. And, for music lovers of all ages, vinyl records never went out of style.
Enter Record Store Day, April 16. It's an initiative managed by the Department of Record Stores, and is organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS) and the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS).
In addition to Record Store Day, the coalition of volunteers "promotes independent record stores year-round with events, special releases and other fun things." MORE
Local festivities
Open in December, Brothers Music KC is one of the local stores taking part in Record Store Day 2016.
"It's become a staple of the music business," said co-owner Cole Maggart. "It gets bigger each year and we've really embraced it."
The Mission, Kan., store will be selling exclusive vinyl releases. There will be food trucks, beer for sale, and live music starting at 4 p.m.
