Americans spent nearly $40 billion in drunk purchases last year, survey finds

Shopping while drunk cost Americans nearly $40 billion last year, according to a new survey from Finder.com .

According to the survey, 26 percent of Americans admitted that they have shopped while they were drunk, which works out to about 53.4 million people. The annual survey reviews about 2,000 American adults about their drunk shopping habits.

Last year, the survey found that more people spent less, only about $30.43 billion, compared to $39.4 billion this year. Forty-six percent of people admitted to drunkenly buying something last year compared to 26 percent this year.

The average person spent $736 on items while under the influence, according to the data from Finder.com.

The survey found that drunk people are most often spending money on shoes and clothing, followed by gambling, cigarettes, DVDs and movies, tech products, narcotics, records, artwork and vacations. Food is the most common drunk purchase though, with more than 50 percent of people saying they bought a bite while inebriated.

Other crazy things people have bought while drunk include a pet (12.38 percent), a vacation (14.54 percent), a car (10.81 percent) and a motorcycle (5.11 percent).

Among the different generations, millennials were the ones who spent the most on drunk purchases last year, $1,047, followed by Gen X at $469 and Baby Boomers at $466.
