It’s National Pet Day, a day to celebrate your furry (or not so furry) friends and show them just how much you care.

Pets bring so much joy into our lives, they definitely deserve a special day.

National Pet Day started in 2006 by Colleen Paige to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness on the animals waiting in shelters to find their forever homes.

According to www.petdayusa.com, here are eight ways to celebrate National Pet Day:

1.       Adopt a pet from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization.

2.       Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to care for the animals.

3.       Donate blankets, food and toys to a favorite animal welfare organization.

4.       Have a National Pet Day party and celebrate all of your pets!

5.       Spend the day taking photos of your pets and then post them on our Facebook page!

6.       Assist an ill, elderly or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food, hay or needed items for their pets.

7.       Buy your pet a fun new toy.

8.       Hire a professional pet photographer for a fun photo shoot.

There are so many great animal organizations in the metro area that work hard in helping animals find homes. We have a list of some of the organizations where you can adopt a pet at the bottom of this page.

Share your photosof your pets as we celebrate National Pet Day!

In honor of this special day, Nextdoor.com compiled a list of America's favorite pet names by region and by type.
