Kansas City is the City of Fountains, so the city’s staple Nelson-Atkins Art Museum wouldn’t be complete without one of its own.

Fountain Basin is located in the courtyard of the Rozella Court Restaurant inside the museum. It’s been a part of the museum since it opened in 1933. The bowl of the fountain was purchased from Italy in 1930. It’s made of Cipollino marble and weighs four tons.

The base of the fountain was designed by Thomas Wight, the architect who designed the entire museum. The pedestal consists of four lion paws and the 12 medallions representing the signs of the Zodiac encircle the outside of the base.
