KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While many people are unemployed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, jobs in certain lines of work are open.

The grocery industry hums along, and so does bringing in new employees.

"We've seen a large rise in hiring. Last week, I think we hired 21 people here at the store. We're still looking for more people, some helpful smiles," said Marty Streit, store director of the Independence Hy-Vee.

Cleaning is also in high demand. Woodley Building Maintenance is looking for a COVID-19 response team.

"Customers asking us to do specific cleaning, detailed cleaning, sanitation of their surfaces in their building. We've put together a team that is trained," said Chief Operating Officer Terry Woodley.

Another industry that's currently hiring is delivery.

In a statement to 41 Action News, FedEx said "we regularly ramp up and scale back our recruiting based on business needs. As FedEx continues to power e-commerce and deliver critical supplies to the communities that need them most, we continue to hire.”

Streit said they are looking for even more new hires as internet grocery business continues booming.

"It was already on the rise before that, but now it's exploded. A lot of customers are taking advantage of it, it's super simple now," Streit said.

It hasn't been an easy process for everyone.

"We believe our COVID-19 teams need to be 20 people. We have furloughed in this process about 100 people. Those are the first people we'll look at," Woodley said.

Once he fills those spots, Woodley said he will need more help for his business, which currently cleans 700 buildings.

"As we anticipate the current need and as buildings open back up again, we anticipate that need will be stronger," Woodley said.
