KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Raymore woman who survived ovarian and endometrial cancer is now recovering from the novel coronavirus.

Christy Hatfield tested positive for COVID-19 two weeks ago, after she went to the emergency room with a fever and shortness of breath.

"I had aches, headaches, pain, trouble breathing," Hatfield told 41 Action News. "You don’t want to eat, you don’t want to do anything. You just want to lay there."

Hatfield believes she contracted the virus because of her weak immune system, due to the chemotherapy treatments she underwent for her cancer.

While she is at risk for a more severe form of COVID-19 due to her weaker immune system, Hatfield is getting better. Tuesday will be her last day in self-isolation.

"When I caught corona, I honestly cried," she said. "I felt last year was my tough year, and this year was going to be a breeze. So I did cry but went, ‘OK, I made it last year, I’ll make it this year."

Hatfield's suggestion to other coronavirus patients is to keep a positive attitude and look toward promising times ahead. She said this helped her when she battled cancer and the coronavirus.

"You just have to, you just have to keep going every single day," she said. "I want to see my daughter. I want to get out of here and see my daughter."
