1 dead in shooting near Lawrence Public Library; suspect in custody

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person died in a shooting outside the Lawrence Public Library on Wednesday, according to the Lawrence Police Department (LKPD).

The victim has been identified as Vincent Lee Walker, 39, of Lawrence.

The shooting happened in the 700 block of Vermont Street about 5:10 p.m.

Police identified a suspect as Nicholas Beaver, 32, of Topeka, around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday night. Around 10:15 p.m., LKPD updated their social media to say Beaver was taken into custody.

Beaver was booked into the Douglas County Jail on Wednesday for second-degree murder, according to a booking log. He was arrested at W 6th and Michigan streets, which is less than a mile from the crime scene, per the log.

Beaver was booked without bond.

Police said there were many witnesses of the shooting and ask them to contact the department at (785) 832-7509.

A motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting has not yet been identified.
