13-year-old boy charged with murder in Olathe 14-year-old's shooting death

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 13-year-old boy was charged Friday with second-degree murder in Johnson County District Court in connection with the shooting death of a another teen.

District Attorney Steve Howe announced the charges, which stemmed from an incident that occurred around 2:17 a.m. on Thursday in the 12500 block of South Constance Street in Olathe.

Police and Johnson County Med-Act personnel responding to an armed disturbance at that location found 14-year-old Zavier Mendoza suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mendoza was set to start his freshman year at Olathe East High School next week.

The suspect has not been identified, because he is a juvenile. He is due in juvenile court for a first appearance on Aug. 19.

According to Olathe police, the two teens knew each other.
