BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. -- A Blue Springs family remains heartbroken after a suspect broke into their home and stole nine dogs, including seven three-week-old puppies.

The crime took place last Thursday inside a home on SW 22nd Street.

Carol Stathas told 41 Action News that the suspect came into their home as the family members went out to get dinner nearby and took the dogs from the main bedroom.

“My husband called me and was frantic because the puppies were gone,” the former dog groomer explained. “Somebody had evidently come in the house for that mission, just to take my dogs.”

Stathas said two adult Pomeranians and seven puppies were stolen.

Days later, she said the crime was still tough to believe.

“I’m very heartbroken,” she explained. “These are my children. They’re my babies and I want them back.”

Stathas said the crime occurred after she posted an advertisement for the puppies on Facebook.

The posting led to Stathas providing her address to interested buyers.

She suspects one of the potential customers she made contact with committed the crime.

“I didn’t know there was people like this in the world,” Stathas explained. “I really didn’t know that this type of person is out there.”

Stathas added that she had not had any issues selling dogs on Facebook in the past.

Investigators said a person of interest has been identified in the case.

With the investigation still ongoing, Stathas hoped her dogs would be found soon.

“I will never ever let anybody else come to my house to get a puppy,” she explained “I am just really praying that my babies are safe and they come home and that somebody out there will help get them home.”

Police said no other items were taken from the home during the burglary.
