KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man armed with a rifle and a handgun was shot by Atchison police Wednesday.

According to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, an Atchison police officer was dispatched on a theft of services call at 10:35 a.m. to a residence near N. Fourth Street and L Street. The officer reportedly encountered a man with a rifle at the scene. He then ordered the man to drop the rifle and he complied.

However, a verbal conflict with the man allegedly escalated and the officer deployed a stun gun towards the man. It's not clear if the man was hit or not.

The man then allegedly produced a handgun and fired shots at the officer. The officer returned fire and hit the man.

He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

He was later identified as 44-year-old Bryan C. Boldridge.

The KBI is investigating.
