KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A police officer in Cameron, Missouri, was hospitalized Saturday after being run over by a stealing suspect at Walmart and firing shots at the suspect.
Officers were responding to a report of stealing in progress around 12:45 p.m.
An arriving suspect approached a suspect as he entered a car and began to leave.
The suspect backed up and struck several parked vehicles in the Walmart parking lot before driving forward and hitting the officer, according to a release from the Cameron Police Department.
The officer fell to the ground and was run over by the suspect’s vehicle but managed to fire at the fleeing suspect with his duty weapon.
The Cameron PD officer was treated at a local hospital for his injuries and subsequently released.
A second officer responding to the call overheard the incident and located the suspect vehicle leaving the scene.
A pursuit was initiated along westbound U.S. 36when the suspect refused to stop. Several agencies, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, joined the pursuit, which ended near Wathena, Kansas.
One male subject was taken into custody and was being held at a jail in Kansas awaiting charges.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is in charge of the ionvestigation since it involves shots fired by a police officer.
