Police investigate robbery, homicide in KCMO

A man was robbed and then fatally shot Tuesday morning while walking near St. John and Cypress.

Police were originally called to an outside disturbance after reports of shots being fired about 4:45 a.m.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound.

He told officers the suspect approached him, took his belongings, including his phone and shot him. Officers said the man was outside trying to find Wi-Fi for his phone.

The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries. The victim was identified as Corey L. Walls, 35, of KCMO. 

Police searched the area for a suspect, but were unable to locate the gunman.

The area has seen it's share of crime, just yesterday there was a reported robbery blocks away from St. John and Cypress. On November 16, there were two reported assaults and on November 12 there was a breaking and entering case a block away at St. John and Elmwood. 

Police say this is the 109th homicide this year.

Editor's Note: This story initially said there was one reported assault near St. John and Cypress on November 16. There were actually two assaults reported at that intersection that day. The story has been updated.
