KC man charged with shooting church greeter

UPDATE 2 PM 5/23/2017 | A Kansas City has been charged in the shooting of a church greeter over the weekend.

Orlando L. Gentry, 29, is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon and a misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly carrying the loaded gun into a church.

According to a release from the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, Gentry has been convicted of a felony in the past.

Police say around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, a suspect came in a back door at the House of Refuge Church at 11800 Hillcrest Road and fired multiple shots at the greeter, striking the victim at least once in the head.

The victim then fell through a window in the church, falling into the sanctuary.

The victim’s injuries were described as non life-threatening.

Police have not announced any arrests in the shooting.
