Independence police investigating 2 overnight homicides

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Independence police are investigating two overnight homicides.

The first happened in the 3600 block of South Greenwich Lane around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said they found a person dead inside a home and are investigating the death as a homicide.

Independence police later identified the victim as 52-year-old Daina M. Smith, of Independence.

A person of interest is in custody in that case.

The second homicide happened in the 12300 block of East U.S. 40 around 1:09 a.m. Monday.

Police said two people were shot at the location. One was killed and one was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

On Wednesday, police identified the victim as 17-year-old SirJohn R. Harris of Lee's Summit. Police said the other person who was injured had been released from the hospital and taken into police custody.
