KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and robbery in separate 2016 incidents received a 20-year prison sentence, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Tyre Jackson, 26, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the October 2016 fatal shooting of Derrick Jones in Westport.
Jackson also pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in connection with a December 2016 incident.
Jones, who was 25 when he was murdered, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in a parking lot in the 4000 block of Mill Street around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2016.
He was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
Jones, his brother and a friend were parked behind the Sunfresh grocery store in Westport when Jackson and an accomplice approached and shouted “gimme what you got,” according to court documents.
Jackson demanded more than the trio emptied from their pockets and a struggle ensued before Jones was shot, according to witnesses.
Surveillance video also showed Jackson in the area carrying a white styrofoam cup and straw similar to the one recovered at the shooting scene. DNA from the straw belonged to Jackson.
When Jackson was arrested on Dec. 27, 2016, two guns were recovered from his vehicle, including a .45-caliber handgun that was linked to shell casings at Jones’ murder scene.
Charges are pending against a second suspect in Jones’ death.
