Person of interest in custody in KCMO deadly stabbing

KANSAS CITY, Mo. UPDATE 11/29/2017: Police say the man stabbed to death near Independence Ave. and Woodland Tuesday was Alton D. Hughes, 51.

A person of interest is in custody after a man was stabbed and killed in Kansas City, Missouri Tuesday.

At 3 p.m., officers were sent to Independence Avenue and Woodland for a person down in the street. 

When officers arrived, they found a man in the street with no signs of life. He was pronounced dead a short time later. 

Witnesses said the victim and the suspect were arguing while walking near the BP gas station. The situation turned physical near Woodland, where it appears the victim was stabbed, according to police. 

Police have a person of interest in custody.

This is the 131st homicide in KCMO this year. There were 116 at this point last year.

Editor's Note: Initial reports indicated the victim was shot. Police later clarified that the victim was stabbed.
