KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dozens of residents at the View High Lakes Apartments spent Friday cleaning up after vandals busted into several cars overnight.

"I walked out this morning and our windows were shattered," Chelsey Rackers, one of the victims.

Rackers and her family are relying on trash bags to keep the elements out of their two vehicles until they can get their windows replaced.

"We now have to pay for it and so it's out of our pocket, definitely not expected," Rackers said.

Same goes for Austin Fiorella who came home at 10 p.m. Thursday. When he stepped out at around 1 a.m. Friday, the damage was done.

"They didn't take anything — nothing valuable — I just came out here and 40 cars were broken into," Fiorella said.

KCPD confirmed to 41 Action News that at least 40 cars were hit.

Many of them parked along a stretch of the apartment complex.

Fiorella says a retaining wall secludes the area. He also believes the crooks also took advantage of the bad weather.

"It's in the far side of the apartment [and] during the thunder — there's no apartment right there so it was in the best place to do it for cover," Fiorella said.

A police spokesperson said, at this time detectives don't have any suspect information, adding it will take time to process and review all the evidence for leads.

Rackers said the break-ins reinforced an important lesson for her.

"Don't leave anything valuable in your car," Rackers said.

If you have any information about this case call KC Police or the Greater Kansas City Crimestoppers Hotline 816-474-TIPS (8477).
