UPDATE, 9:45 p.m. | The male suspect was taken into custody around 8:45 p.m. without incident, and an investigation is being conducted into the initial kidnapping charges "and any additional crimes," according to a KCPD spokesperson.

ORIGINAL STORY | A woman and her child are safe after being held against their will Monday night in Kansas City, Missouri, while the suspect is involved in an armed standoff with police.

Police responded around 5:20 p.m. to the 4400 block of North Campbell Street on a reported disturbance.

The woman and her child, who have not been identified, were forced into a vehicle in Independence and driven to the Kansas City location.

They were located near the home and informed police that they were allowed to leave, according to a KCPD spokesperson.

Tactical officers and negotiators are on scene.

The suspect is known to both the victim and police, according to the spokesperson.
