KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fire crews responding to a house fire Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri, discovered a body.
Kansas City police officers had been called this afternoon to a residence in the 5600 block of North Poe Street in the Northland and observed a fire in the basement of the home.
The Kansas City Fire Department then responded to the fire around 5 p.m. and discovered a body.
The death was ruled a homicide and the victim was identified Friday as Matthew Calkins, 35, of Gardner, Kansas.
No cause of death has been released, but charges in the case are expected next week, according to KCPD.
KCFD Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker said the department wasn’t releasing any information tonight other than to confirm there was a fire at the location and a body was discovered.
KCPD remained at the scene to assist with the investigation, but no cause of death had been determined yet.
"An adult male who was at the residence is being questioned by detectives," Ofc. Darin Snapp, a public information officer with KCPD, said in a press release.
