KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man is facing charges after he allegedly beat his mom until she passed out in her dining room on Thanksgiving day.

Jackson County Prosecutors have charged Larry J. Oates, 56, of Kansas City, Mo., with one count of assault causing serious physical injury and armed criminal action in connection to an incident around noon on Thanksgiving.

Prosecutors allege that Oates got into a disagreement with his mom, which escalated when Oates struck his mom in the back of the head with a 6-inch skillet. The victim told police that her son then climbed on top of her in attempt to strangle her. Oates allegedly struck his mom in the face several times with a closed fist before she passed out.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious head and facial injuries. When officers arrived on the scene, they located blood in the dining room, and described the victim’s left eye as completely hemorrhaged and bulged out.

When investigators questioned Oates about the incident, he told them that he went outside to feed cats and when he came back, he found his mom lying on the floor unconscious and denied assaulting his mother.

Oates later said that he believed his mom was assaulted but didn’t know who did it.

Oates appeared before a judge Monday for an initial arraignment. A preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 14. He remains in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
