KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man has been charged with murder and accused of stealing marijuana from the victim along with another suspect.

Jacob Everson, 24, of Kansas City, Missouri, is charged in Jackson County District Court with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and robbery.

Joseph Mason was shot to death Jan. 11, 2019, in an apartment at 1123 Hardesty Ave. in KCMO.

A witness told police she saw Mason open the apartment door then heard two gunshots, according to court documents.

Mason ran to a bedroom and tried to hold the door closed.

The witness told police she heard the men yelling at Mason to give them the money, the court document said.

The bedroom door broke and fell on top of Mason.

One of the suspects then shot Mason in the head. The two men stole marijuana and fled from the apartment.

Police found one of the guns after stopping a pedestrian in February 2019.

Everson told one person he and the other man involved in the killing sold some of the marijuana.

Police arrested Everson and another man Wednesday in connection with the murder.

Everson, faced with evidence of his involvement in the murder, told police he and the other man went to the apartment to rob Mason.

He said the other man got into a struggle with Mason and shot Mason twice in the stomach, according to court documents.

The shooter then shot Mason in the head inside the apartment, Everson told detectives.
