LAWRENCE, Kan. — A Lawrence man accused of attempted murder after allegedly driving a vehicle with his mother as a passenger into a lake has been declared mentally incompetent.

A Douglas County District Court judge ruled Wednesday that Jeremy S. Williams, 22, should receive treatment at Larned State Hospital, according to court records.

He was charged with second-degree attempted murder after a caller reported seeing a car drive into Lone Star Lake on Feb. 25, prosecutors said.

The caller helped Williams' mother out of the car after she appeared unable to remove herself because of a broken leg, Douglas County Sheriff's officials said. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and cold exposure.

Williams' case will remain pending while he receives treatment at Larned, The Lawrence Journal-World reported.
