KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was found dead Wednesday night east of Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

Officers responded to a shooting call just after 10 p.m. to the area near Virginia Avenue and Brush Creek Boulevard.

Callers reported seeing the victim, an adult male, on the ground and unresponsive.

They assumed he had been shot and reported a shooting to police.

Emergency medical service crews responded but weren't immediately able to determine a cause of death, so a suspicious death investigation was launched.

Police said circumstances were suspicious enough that it could have been a homicide, so detectives responded and began investigating the man's death.

During the investigation, detectives determined the man's injuries weren't consistent with an accident or natural causes, police said.
