Man sentenced to 50 years for aspiring rapper's murder

James A. Willis was sentenced to 50 years in prison plus 19 months for the murder of an aspiring rapper. 

Jurl Carter, 24, was shot and killed outside the Roxy Club in Overland Park in September of 2015. 

In court hearings, witnesses said the James Willis and his brother, Dale Willis, got into a fight with Carter before he was shot and killed. Carter was killed as he was driving away from the night club. 

Dale Willis was found guilty of murdering Jurl Carter in September 2016.

James Willis's brother, Dale Willis, was also sentenced to 50 years in prison for Carter's murder in November 2016.

Both the Willis brothers have a lengthy criminal history.

According to public records, James Willis' past includes running from police, drug trafficking, assault and robbery. Dale Willis served time from being the leader of a drug ring while he was selling cocaine. His other crimes include robbery and assault.
