KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A police pursuit that started in Pittsburg, Kansas, led to a man being shot to death by police in rural Barton County, Missouri.

An officer with the Pittsburg Police Department attempted to stop a 2007 Toyota Camry around midnight Friday morning near Quincy and Broadway streets for illegal tags.

The driver refused to stop, leading to a police pursuit, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a news release.

The vehicle became disabled near East 540th Avenue and South 270th Street near the Kansas and Missouri state line, where the driver fled with a shotgun into a Missouri field.

The officer pursued the suspect, who was later identified as 34-year-old Jeremy Pelican of Pittsburg, into the field, where the shooting occurred.

Pelican was taken to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, where he died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

The officer was not injured.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control is leading the investigation with assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which sent the news release.
