KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The number of on-campus rapes reported at the University of Kansas in 2017 was double the previous year, according to a newly released report. 

In its annual safety report, the university said that 12 rapes were reported on its Lawrence campus in 2017, up from six reported on-campus rapes in 2016. 

Nine of the 12 on-campus rapes occurred in residential facilities, according to the report. 

In all, 14 rapes were reported to the university in 2017, including off-campus rapes. In 2016, 13 total rapes were reported.

According to the university, crime statistics provided in the annual report are based on incidents reported to the KU Public Safety Office, the Office of Student Affairs and the Department of Student Housing.
