Metro Squad activated after one man killed, another injured Friday in Leawood shooting

LEAWOOD, Kan. — One man was killed and another man was injured Friday night in a shooting in Leawood.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the Leawood at State Line Apartments in the area of West 138th Terrace and Kenneth Road.

Leawood Police responded to the sound of shots in the area.

Zoya Howard, who lives in the apartment complex, said she came home to chaos.

"There was a bunch of cop cars, it was blocked off on both sides of the entrance, bunch of crime scene tape, bunch of detectives walking around, police officers walking around with flash lights," Howard said.

Leawood Capt. Brad Robbins told 41 Action News it appeared that parties from two different cars exchanged gunfire.

Zachary Morrisey, 24, of Kansas City, MO, was driven to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. The second victim, a resident of the apartment complex, is being treated at a local trauma center.

The shooting marks Leawood's first homicide of the year.

Police said there is no known threat to any other residents of the apartment complex, but extra patrols will be in the area to ensure safety.

The Metro Squad has been activated to investigate the homicide. A Metro Squad team consists of experienced investigators called together to assist Leawood Police Detectives investigating this crime.

No suspect has been identified in this crime, police said.

Police are looking for a dark-colored Dodge Challenger that was seen leaving the parking lot shourly after the shooting.
