KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man was killed and a woman seriously injured when their SUV collided with a train Thursday night.

The crash happened around 9:20 p.m. near Front Street and Topping Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri's East Bottoms area.

Police said the SUV was heading westbound on Front Street, the train was crossing the road going south, and the two collided.

The crash killed a man — identified Friday as Gary D. Heishman, 56, of Kansas City, Missouri — in the passenger seat of the SUV.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition according to police.

The crossing is marked with railroad crossing signs, but is not illuminated or electronic.

Police said the train's conductor was marking the road with flares, and was in the process of marking the eastbound lanes when the crash happened.

Investigators were talking to witnesses and had a detective on the way to the hospital to speak with the driver.
