KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman suspected of shoplifting clothes at Oak Park Mall managed to avoid police by lying to a woman who unwittingly provided a getaway ride.
The crimes began Tuesday night when the suspect and another shoplifter ran from the JCPenney store near West 95th Street and Quivira Road in Overland Park.
Overland Park police found the two women and three children in the would-be getaway car.
The driver jumped out and ran, while the second woman stayed with the children and stolen clothes, police said.
The fleeing suspect managed to get into a car and spun a quick lie, police said.
She told the driver she was being chased and would be killed. The driver believed her and drove off.
The woman stopped at West 95th Street and Nall Avenue and told the shoplifter the ride was over.
She did give the suspect her shoes, $10 and a COVID-19 mask, police said.
The suspect was still on the loose late Tuesday night.
