KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Officers had to take cover during a theft investigation Wednesday afternoon.

Kansas City police responded to 25th Street and Benton Boulevard just after 1:30 p.m. on a theft report involving a grill. Officers had to take cover when bullets came their way from down the street.

The officers called for backup, and the area was blocked off.

No officers were struck by the gunfire.

Officers were originally in the area to recover a large grill that was stolen from the American Royal.

It's unclear where the grill was stored, or if the homeowner at the house where police recovered the grill had anything to do with the theft. Officers couldn't tell 41 Action News if there was a suspect in the grill theft.

Kansas City police didn't locate the shooter.
