KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A man murdered early Saturday morning in the northland marks Kansas City, Missouri's 100th homicide, police said Monday.

Authorities identified the man as Jasen Byers, 42, of Kansas City.

Police found Byers inside of his business in the 4000 block of North Oak Trafficway suffering from a gunshot wound in the early morning hours of Saturday.

The murder places the city’s rate higher than previous years' year-to-date. For all of 2016, there were 128 homicides in Kansas City. At this point last year, there were 74.

The rate is something police are concerned about.

“Although homicide rates are up nationwide, we are focusing on violence here in KC,” Kansas City, Misouri Police Spokeswoman Capt. Stacey Graves said in an email. “We are working hard to solve the cases we have and at the same time, taking a hard look at how we can help prevent violence from occurring.”
