KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police identified the 26-year-old man who was shot and killed Monday during an altercation with a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, which is investigating the officer-involved shooting, said Cody R. McClintick died after the incident in the Motel 6 parking lot in the 3600 block of North Randolph Road.

The deputy was conducting a vehicle check at the motel, which isn’t far from Worlds of Fun.

It’s unclear what prompted the deputy to investigate the vehicle, but a fight ensued with the driver that led to the use of lethal force, police said.

The Clay County deputy was not physically injured during the encounter with McClintick, who died at the scene.

Police also investigated two “suspicious devices” inside the vehicle, but it was later determined they were not explosive devices.

McClintick was arrested in July 2014 by the Chillicothe Police Department for conspiracy to distribute, deliver, manufacture or produce a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

He received a seven-year sentence after a guilty plea in March 2015, but it was suspended in favor of supervised probation. That probation was revoked in July 2016.

McClintick was arrested in April 2018 by the Brookfield Police Department for possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to six years in prison in June 2018. 41 Action News has reached out to the court to determine how McClintick was out of jail at the time of Monday's incident.
