A man carrying a rifle and a handgun and wearing ballistic vest and carrying pepper spray is charged with shooting at a neighbor’s van with two children inside.
The gunfire happened just after 11 a.m. Monday at a house in the 4400 block of North Kelsey Road in Kansas City.
A court document states 6- and 8-year-old boys were in the back seat of the van when Michael Desmond fired his rifle. The bullet missed the 2001 Chrysler Town and County van.
Monday was the 8-year-old boy’s birthday.
Desmond, 35, ordered the van’s driver out of the van. The woman complied and the second woman slid over and drove away with the two children unharmed in the van. Desmond fired another shot at the woman, but the bullet did not hit her.
The woman with Desmond, Jolene Busser, also carried a handgun.
Police arrived a short time after shooting and arrested Desmond and Busser.
Desmond said he had issues with his neighbors and feared for his life. Busser refused to talk to police.
Desmond is charged in Clay County Court with discharging a firearm at or from a motor vehicle at a person and armed criminal action.
Busser, 33, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
The shooting forced brief lockdowns at Northgate Middle School and North Kansas City School District headquarters while police investigated the gunfire.
