UPDATE: Charges have been filed against a 15-year-old in connection with the incident. The juvenile is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a minor and one count of lewd and lascivious behavior.

Prairie Village police are investigating after a freshman at Shawnee Mission East reported being sexually assaulted in a boys' restroom.

The alleged attack happened last Wednesday after school. According to a school administrator, John Douglass, three teens were horsing around when things got out of hand.

"It started with horseplay and the second student thought he was playing around goofing around in the boys' restroom. And he was holding the door shut thinking that was the joke while inside the restroom these acts took place," said Douglass.

The girl reported the attack to the school principal. District officials contacted Prairie Village police.

"This was a very serious incident in our eyes. It was handled as a very serious incident," said Douglass.

District leaders notified the parents of the students involved, but they did not send a letter home to all Shawnee Mission East parents.

"Having something like that happen in our community, as a parent to a child that goes to the school, I should have been notified," said Laura Capello.

One student said it was hard to believe this happened at her school.

"I was for sure shocked because I usually don’t hear about this thing at East," said Freshman Alex Corbin. “It was disappointing. I looked up Shawnee Mission East the next day and every single article list was about the sexual assault, like it just brought down our school’s reputation.”

Prairie Village police declined to comment on their investigation. They plan to turn the case over to the district attorney's office.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story included a video saying the student claimed she was raped. The student reported she was sexually assaulted.
