KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Platte County prosecutors say a Shawnee, Kansas man shot and killed a Northland man during an argument Thursday night.

Coty Bortz, 26, faces second-degree murder, armed criminal action and assault on a police animal charges in connection to an incident Thursday in Houston Lake.

Charging documents say Bortz told investigators the victim, identified as 24-year-old Jacob Stowers, had charged at him, leaving him no choice but to open fire.

Witness accounts from the girlfriend of the victim told police a different story, that Bortz had re-entered the house and initially pointed the gun at her before Stowers stepped in front of him.

An autopsy of Stowers indicated he was shot from behind.

Bortz was located by a police K-9 dog in a nearby creek. When police caught up with the dog and Bortz, Bortz was threatening to shoot the dog.

Prosecutors have requested a $150,000 bond.
