Slater man in custody after exchanging gunfire with police

UPDATE 7 PM 5/28/2017: The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the man suspected of shooting at officers as Charles Townsend, 30, of Slater, Missouri.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Officials say a man in Slater, Missouri was injured after exchanging gunfire with police early Sunday morning.

The man's injuries were not considered serious.

Officials say a Slater Police Officer responded to an armed disturbance call shortly after midnight Sunday. The suspect allegedly fired at the officer with a shotgun, who then took cover behind a patrol car.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside a home and the Missouri State Highway Patrol was called in to assist. Officials say that negotiations weren't successful and at around 7:00 a.m. gas canisters were deployed into the home. The suspect then allegedly fired at officers and they returned fire. 

Troopers were eventually able to take the suspect into custody. Officials say his injuries were caused by shrapnel.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. An investigation is ongoing.
