KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A northland man was in for quite a surprise last Wednesday night when, after walking his dog, he said he found a man breaking into his car.
Late last week, Platte County prosecutors charged Robert Bailey, 33, with one count of felony property damage, alleging he caused more than $750 in damage to the dashboard of the victim’s car.
The victim originally told investigators that around 7 p.m. on Nov. 22, in the 8400 block of N. Cosby Ave., he was returning from walking his dog when he saw an unknown person sitting in the passenger seat of his vehicle.
After double-checking that it was his car, the victim approached the car and asked the man why he was inside.
The victim said that Bailey then jumped out of the car and took off running. The victim, however, was able to keep up with the suspect, who the victim said was impaired and “unable to run very well.”
The victim chased Bailey into the scene of an unrelated traffic crash worked by police, where officers took Bailey into custody.
When investigators questioned Bailey, the suspect denied any involvement and said he was mistakenly arrested for no reason.
Bailey was arraigned in court Monday, where he pleaded not guilty and said he would hire his own attorney. A judge will hear Bailey’s bond reduction request on Tuesday. Bailey remains in the Platte County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
