KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A man charged with murder said he got into an argument with the victim, according to court records.

Jackson County, Missouri prosecutors on Tuesday charged Marlawn Betts, 24, with one count of second-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action in the shooting death of Jesse Young, 27, on Saturday in the 2300 block of E. 9th Street.

Witnesses told investigators that Betts and Young were involved in an argument and Young wanted to take it outside, according to a probable cause statement.

Once outside, witnesses said Betts shot Young, who later died from his injuries.

Prosecutors said a young child was at home at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors have requested a $250,000 bond.

Betts remained in Kansas City Police custody as of Tuesday evening.
