Police are investigating a suspicious death in south Kansas City.
The body of woman, later identified as Demetrius Walker, 43, of Kansas City, Missouri, was found by a Burns and McDonnell utility worker at approximately 8 a.m. Friday. Walker was found behind a dumpster at Temple of Faith Baptist Church on the 3000 block of Gregory Boulevard.
According to KCPD, it is difficult to say how long Walker has been dead.
John Payne is the pastor of Temple of Faith Missionary Baptist Church. He received a phone call from his secretary followed by a call from police.
“They needed to get my consent to search and that sort of thing,” Payne said.
Payne said unfortunately people have become desensitized to all the violence, but it's the community's responsibility to stop it.
Fielding questions from reporters, Payne said he’s disappointed but not surprised that someone would use church property to dispose of human remains.
“What do you say to a person that does that kind of thing? She’s related to somebody. She’s somebody’s daughter, perhaps somebody’s mother or sister. She’s human. Someone ought to care,” said Payne.
He also said they are going to put up a new security system just in case something like this happens again.
Detectives with the Kansas City Police Department canvassed the neighborhood and talked to neighbors.
Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
