The city’s latest act of violence that has ripped a family apart unfolded inside a 97-year-old house in the Wornall Homestead.

“We're investigating this as an apparent murder-suicide,” Sgt. Kari Thompson, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson, said.

According to police, 64-year-old Nicki Alexopoulos was fatally shot by her son because she found out he had been stealing substantial amounts of money from her.

The son committed suicide before police arrived on scene.

People who live near 57th Street and Central Avenue told 41 Action News they heard half a dozen gunshots around 6:30 p.m.

Some ran out to see what was going on, but went back inside fearing the shooter could be on the loose.

Authorities said the suspected gunman also shot his mother's caregiver at least four times in the back as she ran from the home. She was found bleeding in the front yard and has been listed in critical condition.

“This neighborhood has been shaken to the core tonight, this family has been devastated so we ask for your prayers tonight for this family, for this neighborhood and for community,” Sgt. Thompson said.

This murder-suicide is Kansas City’s 96th homicide of 2016.

“The homicide rate is astronomical at this time, and we need our community, we need our community leaders, our advocates, our partners to step up and stop this violence,” Sgt. Thompson said.
