KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The westbound lanes of Interstate 670 past U.S. 71 Highway are back open after they were shut down for several hours Sunday morning due to a fatal head-on crash.

Just after 2:45 a.m. Sunday, authorities responded to the area of westbound I-670 and Locust Street on a reported injury crash with life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a white Kia Optima was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-670 while crossing all lanes of the interstate.

The Kia was then struck by a black Chevrolet Avalanche that was going westbound on I-670.

The Chevrolet driver and the Kia driver were both uninjured in the crash.

There were three passengers inside the Kia, two of whom were transported to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Both are currently in critical condition, police said.

The third passenger was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

All lanes of westbound I-670 were closed for about four hours, according to police.

The investigation, including suspected impairment of both drivers, is ongoing.
