Administrators in the Kansas City, Kan., School District want their students thinking about college as early as 6th grade. The plan is to have every senior by 2021 graduate with not only a diploma but one of the following:

  • At least one year of college credit from a nearby community college
  • A career certificate
  • At least a 21 ACT score which will guarantee admission to a state community college.

The Diploma Plus program will be implemented during the next school year.

Administrators believe every child is capable of meeting one of these goals with the help of teachers and parents working together.

About 67 percent of seniors graduate from the KCK school district each year.

The district’s superintendent plans to visit every school in the district and meet with parents during the summer to discuss the program’s goals.
