FDA approves weight loss shot

Imagine getting a shot and shedding unwanted pounds.

Liraglutide, or brand name Saxenda, got FDA approval last year, and passed another round of testing this summer.

Saxenda is now on the market as an injectable weight-loss prescription drug to help people with obesity lose weight and keep it off.

"Without insurance, it will be about $1,000 per month," said Dr. Mack McFarlane.

Dr. McFarlane said the drug is given as a daily shot. Patients can give themselves the shot anytime of the day.
"Compared to a placebo, there is about a 4.5 percent weight loss," he explained.
